What Is Viking Knit (VK)?

So, fellow adventurers, you may have many a question about the subject of this journey. Mainly, you must be asking, what on God's green earth is Viking Knit jewelry?

In a word, this kind of jewelry is made with a particular technique of looping wire around itself to create a tubular mesh. Viking Knit (from here on abbreviated "VK") is usually made with metal, but it is possible to use other materials, like stiff leather or twine. There are also many variations and elaborations that an artist can make on an initial design, which makes VK delightful in experimentation and versatile in look. It's simply a joy to make.

There may be some terminology in this blog that needs to be briefly explained.
  • Gauge: the measurement of the width of wire.
  • Dowel: this is the tool I use to wrap the wire on while I weave it.
  • Draw plate: a board of wood or other hard material with varying sized holes drilled into it. It is used during the construction of a piece to pull newly woven VK into a thinner, longer, more sturdy chain.

For anyone who wishes to learn how to make VK for themselves, here is a decent online (free!) tutorial from the Katrina Lum Designs blog.
